Sustainable Computing
About 3.5% of the world’s emissions come from computing, and it’s increasing rapidly. As our dependence on smart phones, laptops, and the internet grows, we need to treat computational resources as finite and precious.
Research at the University of Glasgow works to extend the life of our devices, increasing their capabilities without increasing energy consumption. It’s called Frugal Computing. Through better software design, programming language and compilers we can increase the lifespan of our devices and reduce the energy they use, harnessing the power of computing to advance sustainable solutions, while lowering computing’s impact on the environment.
